Success in Drug Rehab

Cameron – the son of Academy Award winner Michael Douglas – took a guilty plea this week for dealing drugs that will land him in prison for at least 10 years to a maximum of life. This stems from a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) investigation based on information from unidentified informants who were methamphetamine users and drug dealers. In other words, these rats gave Cameron up to save their own hides. In exchange for agreeing to be cooperating witnesses against Cameron, they were allowed to plead guilty to lesser charges.”

Meth and Kids

Methamphetamine has effects on children which many users ignore or are just not aware. Smoking methamphetamine in the same house as the children puts them at risk for hyperactivity, and respiratory problems. Just because one closes a door doesn’t mean the chemicals of meth are not released into the ventilation system that is also attached to a child’s room. Just walking into a room that someone has smoked meth in is dangerous. Not only can one get high from the smoke fumes, the chemical remnants of meth can still easily be ingested.

During any given television show viewers can be lulled by the many pharmaceutical ads.  The ads circumvent the family doctor and put the client in control with the “Ask your doctor” phrase.  Lately doctors have been answering with Oxycontin, Xanax, Adderal and other addictive “solutions”.

By the end of a news show a viewer may become more interested in the fact that they possibly are beset with one or maladies that require prescription medication than the fact that our country is at war.

“Amid a growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse, some lawmakers are looking to stem the flood of television ads for prescription medications, the New York Times reported July 27.

The pharmaceutical industry spends billions of dollars annually advertising their products directly to consumers, but Rep. Jerrold Nadler’s (D-N.Y.) Say No to Drug Ads Act would eliminate the tax deductions for such ads. Meanwhile, Rep. James P. Roan (D-Va.) is seeking a ban on sexual aids like Viagra, citing decency standards for prime-time TV, and Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) wants to give the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) power to ban ads for new drugs for a period of time until the marketplace demonstrates that they are safe and effective.”

Alcohol Addiction

Many times the families of alcoholics are the ones that suffer the most in an addiction, whether it is mental or physical abuse they are suffering.  Most of the time the families are lost in the alcoholics cycle of addiction .

Spouses, children, mothers and fathers of the alcohol abuser is left to take care of things normally done by both functioning parties instead of just one; such as, watching the children, paying bills,and even in severe cases because the alcoholic is unable to handle the simplest of task like their own personal hygiene.    So often this cycle becomes unbearable which causes many hardships.  For instance, the rate of divorce among alcoholics is staggering.

Youth and Alcohol

Earlier generations were not exposed to TV ads with young people drinking.  The earliest TV ads showed young mothers using the right kind of detergent or handsome young men getting their hair just right with Brill Cream. There was a different message and different social pressures resulting in different outcomes in terms of behavior in young people. Of course, there were those with drinking problems back then and it is difficult to analyze looking back, why some people seem to get addicted to alcohol no matter the circumstances.

However, young drinkers were not created en masse by the media and life had the opportunity to be more like Ozzie and Harriet – which doesn’t seem too bad, compared to the chaos of this young generation.

This article, which points out that Americans are drinking at an earlier age with each passing decade, challenges the validity of theories promoting alcoholism as a genetically determined disease.

In fact, it clearly indicates that the factors that influence at least that first drink, are outside of the individual – in the environment, not in the genes.

Careful examination needs to be done.  We don’t yet know the line between genetically determined alcoholism and that engineered on Madison Avenue.  However it is much easier to change behavior through addiction treatment than it is to change genes.

“A study of individuals born between 1934 and 1983 found that more Americans began drinking alcohol at an early age over the decades, especially women, and that those who did drink at a younger age were more likely to be alcohol-dependent as adults.

Reuters reported June 9 that researcher Richard A. Grucza of the Washington University School of Medicine and colleagues said that the study doesn’t prove that early drinking leads to dependence, “but what [it] does show is that early drinking does not simply reflect a genetic vulnerability to alcohol dependence.”

American Indian

Indians are some of the best repeat business the alcohol industry has ever had.  Though alcohol is not permitted on the reservations, liquor stores are always nearby and Indians remain prey to firewater and alcoholism.

Using some of the alcohol tax revenue on alcohol addiction treatment might reduce the number of customers and the alcohol industry is obviously watching their bottom line by protesting such a proposal.

Let’s hope for some the bottom line includes quality of life and that this proposal passes.

“A proposal to use beer-tax revenues to fund an alcohol detoxification program in the notorious town of Whiteclay, Neb., is being opposed by alcohol industry lobbyists, the Omaha World-Herald reported Feb. 4.

Whiteclay is home to four stores that sell only beer, and most of that to residents of the “dry” nearby Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The reservation is plagued by alcoholism, and Whiteclay has been dubbed the “Skid Row of the …”
