Hey guys! If you consider going to Methadone program from heroin, please, think about it one more time. You have to know that Methadone despite some positive moments is a very addictive substance. It creates much more severe physical dependence than heroin does. And as a rule ( agree that for few people it works) it doesnt solve your problem at all, on contrary Methadone makes it even more complicated.

Methadone definately saved my marriage & my family & probably my life. Unfortunately, many (most?) methadone clinics are big companies who care about nothing except the bottom line. Which is why they usually hire the cheapest help they can get away with. Often not nearly knowledgeable enough about all aspects of methadone. Also, since they're always looking to make more money, they're always looking for new clients. I guess that's why nobody ever bothers to tell you about the side effects...

Firstly, I do believe that people that are on MMT for addiction, the crime rate is waaaaay down! I know for a fact that without it I'd mostlikely be dead. If not, I'd be in jail or an institution!! It has saved countless lives & I speak from 12 yrs. of experience on MMT! I am a productive citizen now, I pay taxes, vote, & everything else that any of you would do! And that is not including people that are still using drugs. The difference between us is that I USED to use them, now I don't! Also, it is in no way trading one addiction for another! Any more than one who finds out they have diabetes or a heart malady. They too will likely be on medication daily & for the rest of their lives. I can say that after reading this article, I seriously doubt that I'd EVER choose this facility for anything! Thanks for the comments you've made though! Sincerely, D. Ledbetter

Crash Test Addict's reply should have said "24 to 36 hours, and even 48...
I put 24 to 26. A typo obviously.

I also wanted to add that I write about substance issues, as well as having been a substance abuse counselor, and heroin addict for 36 years before I woke up out of my almost 40 year coma in 2004, having spent 22 years in prison as a result of drug related behavior.

In the struggle...

Doctors should not be prescribing this medication to a patient unless he or she already has a tolerance to opiates. The drug should be treated the same as if it were fentanyl. The fact that methadone has a longer acting effect, 24 to 26 hours, and even 48 hours, the drug as too high of a potential for adverse reactions with other medications. And prescribing this drug to younger adults, teens in particular, is asking for trouble from the gate.

I have been on methadone, off and on for years, and like the article said, it just perpetuates the addiction. I started out at one time on 30 milligrams for an initial dose, by the time 6 months had passed I was up to 110 milligrams because of the tolerance build up. When I ended up having to go cold turkey because of an arrest, the withdrawals compared to heroin were like coming off of cotton candy. Methadone has gruesome, long lasting withdrawal symptoms. I did not even begin to start feeling normal until after 40 days, and all but 10 of them were a nightmare.
